BT Redcare is the largest supplier of alarm signalling services for security and fire in the UK. It was established over thirty years ago, and works with both the business and domestic markets. It has around 100,00 customers.
From 1st August 2025, BT has announced it will be closing down all of its Redcare alarm signalling service operations. These customers will need to move quickly to find alternative solutions. Many insurance policies, especially commercial policies, will include a condition that makes having monitored signalling a prerequisite for cover to be in place.
It is (or was) an alarm solution that runs on a standard analogue BT phone line. It works by sending an alert from the customer’s premises to an alarm receiving centre.
Some of us are old enough to remember it being launched. At the time it was cutting edge technology. It was a game changer for a customer’s own protection from the risk of fire and theft and for insurers in terms of risk management.
A BT spokesperson said: “As part of our strategy to simplify our business portfolio and focus on delivering core products and services for our customers, we have decided to close our Redcare business in 2025.” In other words the technology is nearly redundant.
We strongly recommend that customers who currently have the Redcare service consider the following:
- Act now – while the change is over a year away, many in the industry are concerned about the availability of hardware and the ability of suppliers to deal with demand.
- Check your requirements – it’s important to get a like-for-like replacement system. If you have any doubts about what you need, get in contact with us and we’ll be able to tell you what your policy says you need. These can vary from insurer to insurer
Thanks for 30 years of peace of mind Redcare- happy retirement, you deserve it…..
